Cleaning Tips around the Home

Cleaning Tips around the Home

Cleaning is necessary around the home for the health of those who live there and those who enter your home too. It doesn’t have to be a dreaded task when you know what you’re doing and have the correct products. Here are some cleaning tips and product recommendations to help make your life easier when cleaning at home.

Equipment:

Cleaning Caddy

Having the correct equipment is important and can make cleaning your home much easier. Why not conveniently store your cloths, scourers and bottles in this handy cleaning caddy so you can easily take it around with you as you go?

Microfibre cloths

Microfibre Cloths have many uses in household cleaning. You will only need a small amount of product on them and can still get excellent results. They can be used on furniture, household objects such as televisions, glass and mirrors and in the kitchen and bathroom. They are great for picking up dust too.

Different sponges and scourers are specially designed for different uses. Whether you’re cleaning burnt-on mess, doing general cleaning or just doing the washing up, our range will have something for every use. The sponges have anti-grease technology and the scourers are tough on hard to clean areas.

Always make sure you have a pair of household cleaning gloves to protect yourself from germs or chemicals that could be harmful. They are useful for wearing when touching things that you wouldn’t want touching your skin and can also protect the wearer against burns or scalds from hot water. Hot water is often used in cleaning as it kills germs more effectively, but it’s important to be safe when using hot water.

Using a centrefeed/wiper roll to wipe and dry where you have sprayed and cleaned is a hygienic way of cleaning as you can dispose of the used roll afterwards. They are absorbent and strong and don’t fall apart when wet, meaning you don’t have to use much of it, reducing costs and waste. They can be used for cleaning household spills as well as for everyday cleaning.

Bathroom:

Use a liquid soap rather than a bar of soap because a bar of soap can harbour germs. Try our Sterizar 500ml hand wash and use the 5l bottle to refill your dispensing bottle so you don’t go through so many small plastic bottles. Buying them this way is cost-effective too.

Use a toilet descaler and cleaner regularly such as this extra strength one which will not only remove existing limescale and build up but will also prevent it from forming in the future. The killing of bacteria and removal of limescale will help to remove any odours and leave your toilet free of any unpleasant smells, damaging stains and dangerous germs.

We have many washroom cleaning products available, including this washroom cleaner, available in 750ml trigger spray bottle and a 5 litre refill.

TIP: Leave shower doors or shower curtains open after a shower to allow them to dry out thoroughly. This will reduce the likelihood of mould developing.

Kitchen:

When cleaning the kitchen, it’s important to remember to clean the points with high touch traffic such as cupboard handles, fridge and freezer handles, bins and tap handles. Although these areas might not appear to be dirty, they will be harbouring a lot of germs. Fridges are often overlooked in regular cleaning processes and can carry a lot of germs, so giving it a little wipe over regularly will help to keep everyone safe. Use our Antibacterial Spray and Wipe which is tested to be food safe. This comes in a 750ml bottle with a trigger spray as well as a 5 litre refill bottle, which is a handy and cost-effective way to stay topped up on your cleaning products. If you need something a bit stronger, we have kitchen degreasers available, for example this one, which can make tough cleaning easier.

Having a hand wash in the kitchen is important so you are reminded to always wash your hands before and after handling food. Ensure you use separate chopping boards for meat, vegetables, seafood etc. Plastic chopping boards are best as they are easier to clean than wood. Always wash your hands before and after handling food, especially raw meat and always wash your hands after touching the bin.

Whether you haven’t cleaned your oven in a while or you’ve had a culinary mishap resulting in a mess too big to ignore, oven cleaning is a job that needs to be done. Old food or grease stuck to your oven is not only unsightly and can affect the taste of your food but it can be potentially damaging to the integrity and efficiency of your oven as well as posing a fire risk. Oven cleaning is a task that we all dread, but with this SF210 Oven Degreaser is really won’t be a hassle anymore! This oven cleaner eliminates burnt on fat quickly and effectively.

TIP: To remove fingerprints from a stainless steel appliance, use a small amount of baby oil on a cloth or piece of wiping roll.

Elsewhere:

Polishing surfaces with furniture polish not only removes dust and smears but also helps to prevent dust from settling again once it has been cleaned. Polish can be used to clean and protect many surfaces such as wood, plastic, tiles and enamel. It easily picks up dust and debris, especially if you use a microfibre cloth with it. Venetian blinds in particular are fiddly to clean as they get really dusty quickly! Instead of using a feather duster (which can just move dust around the house), use a microfibre cloth with some polish on and wipe regularly to prevent a build-up.

TIP: Keeping the house tidy and reducing the amount of clutter you have in your home can help reduce the amount of dust because there will be less items able to collect dust and allergens. This means there is less dusting to do overall too. Result!

Floors are obviously a high traffic area for germs. Use Lemon Floor Gel to clean and treat hard floor surfaces. As well as cleaning, this product will deodorise areas, killing bacteria and leaving behind a pleasant lemon aroma, complementing the finished treated areas. Use together with a mop.

TIP: Have floor mats at the front and back doors to reduce dirt coming in to the house and then ensure you and your guests remove your shoes upon entry to reduce the amount of mud, dirt and debris entering the home.

A glass cleaner is a good product to keep in the cleaning cupboard as it can be used all around the home. Use it on windows, on mirrors, on glass tables and even on tv screens (sparingly, with a cloth) and tiles. This glass cleaner is formulated to remove dirt and marks whilst leaving a shiny, streak-free finish. Use with a cloth or a paper towel.

Other Tips:

Never spray cleaning products directly onto electronics as this may cause damage. Its best to use a soft cloth with the products sprayed on. If you have a docking station for your ipod or phone, use a slightly damp cloth to remove any excess dust.

Dampen a cloth slightly with an antibacterial cleaning product to clean remote controls. We touch these regularly so these are often germ hotspots.

Plants in the house get dusty too. Dampen a cloth with a little water and gently wipe the leaves. Support the leaves with your other hand as you do so to avoid bruising or breaking them. Don’t use polish to clean household plants as this can block their pores and damage their ability to properly breathe.

At the end of your household clean, why not spray an air freshener? We have some wonderfully fresh scents available including berry and citrus. Not only does it eliminate bad odours but it leaves a long-lasting fresh pleasant scent behind too – a lovely finishing touch to a clean.
